Mulled Wine is one of the things I look forward to the most at Christmas time. With perhaps the exception of gingerbread, it’s definitely my favourite festive indulgence. This recipe contains all the flavours and spices that sum up the most wonderful time of the year and what’s more, it’s dead simple to make. You can even put it all in the slow cooker and keep it warming on a low heat, which lets you serve it to guests all the way through an evening! It’s a guaranteed party show stopper. Whether you like it super sweet or extra boozy, this recipe is so adaptable. And for me, it’s not Christmas until you’ve had a glass of mulled vino.
The best thing about this homemade mulled wine is that each and every flavour added to it just makes it better and better. Also if you like it a bit more boozy, you can add more wine or liquor to the recipe, just as if you like your mulled wine sweeter, you can drizzle in some extra honey. It’s so easy to put together and you can just keep on adding to it throughout the party season, so you have a constant supply on the hob. Plus, it will make your whole house smell like Christmas…
Mulled Wine Recipe
2x bottles of full-bodied Red Wine
1x tbsp Brandy (optional)
1x tbsp Cointreau (optional)
1.5 litres Water
2x sliced Oranges
Juice of 1/2 a Lemon
2x tbsp Honey
1x tsp finely grated Root Ginger
3x Star Anise
1x Cinnamon Stick
Simply place all the ingredients in a large saucepan and gently warm over a medium heat until it is almost simmering. Keep it at this temperature for around 30 minutes until the flavours have infused and it has heated through. Do not boil though, as the alcohol will evaporate(!)
Using a ladle, serve warm alongside homemade gingerbread…
